Remembrance Sunday 2021

A year ago we were in a sudden short lockdown 2. It was planned to ‘Save Christmas’ – but we knew that Christmas didn’t need saving because Christmas is what saves us! So plans for Remembrance Sunday were rapidly changed.  This year we have the chance to remember together again.

Sunday 14th November 2021 we have our Breakfast Church – we will Remember in all sorts of ways.  We will incorporate a short communion in our 9.30am prayers.  Breakfast will begin at 10.30am – it will be a bit different from last month.  We will meet and pray and then get our food so we eat together.  This is at St Paul’s Manningham

This service will not be livestreamed – we’ll try to give a flavour of how it went on our Youtube channel later in the day.

Notices

The reason for this early email is because we have a Remembrance Service in Heaton Graveyard on Friday 12th November at 10.45am.  Children from local Primary schools will be joining us.

The Manningham War Memorial was unveiled in February 1921 and on Sunday there will be a short ceremony there at 12 noon to mark 100 years – the names of the fallen from the memorial were moved from St Luke’s and are now in St Paul’s.

St Paul’s Church Clean up 20th November 10.30

St Paul’s has never been fully refitted since the refurbishment in late 2019.  We would like to put a few things back on walls and generally get the church spruced up before lots of visitors over Christmas time.  To tempt you to come and help we are offering bacon butties at 10.30 as long as you promise to work hard from 11-1pm!  If you’re not able to do the heavy lifting we would love you to come and keep the kettle on and morale up.

Sunday 7th November – NEW SERIES – “On the road with Jesus”

We are moving on from our series looking at Jesus visiting homes.  For the next three months we are going out on the road with Jesus to look at famous encounters on his travels.  We have just two stories this month, with a break for Remembrance next week. Then during Advent we look at some of the famous journeys taken in the build up to Jesus’ birth.  Then after Christmas we will look at some of the first journey’s Jesus took.

We start this Sunday with “Jesus on the road to visit John the Baptist”.  This is a well known story and we will learn together in church in an All Age Communion Service.

We meet to pray beforehand at 9.30 and the service is at – St Paul’s Manningham – St Paul’s Church, St Paul’s Rd, Bradford BD8 7LS – at 10.30am

We will be livestreaming at https://linktr.ee/ParishofGHM

We will have tea and coffee after the service!

Notices

Rev Ben Care and his family are moving to Bradford shortly – after they have settled in Ben will be licenced on Tuesday 23rd  November 2021 at 7pm at St Paul’s Church, Manningham by Bishop Toby Howarth.  See below for a reminder about them – please join us in praying for a stress free move to our Parish!

Sunday 24th October – The Crowded home – Youth Led Service

This Sunday our Youth group will lead the service.  Our topic is looking at Luke 5:17-26 – the story of the Paralyzed man, his faithful friends and the broken roof! Please come to encourage them.  This is the first time trying this and as you know the reason we have made this latest change is to support and encourage our youngest Disciples.

We meet to pray beforehand at 9.30 and the service is at 10.30am – St Paul’s Church Manningham

We will be livestreaming at https://linktr.ee/ParishofGHM

Great news. From now on we will have tea and coffee after the service!

Sunday 17th October – The Snobby Home – JUICY

On Sunday we continue with our series “What if Jesus Came to my House?”

The service will be in a style we’ve never tried before. Essentially we will start and end together in one place – but in the middle you choose where you want to go to engage with the Bible Story. Each room and space will be in a different style suitable for all.  We’re calling it JUICY because we really want to squeeze everything we can out of the story. The Snobby home: The Woman who Anoints Jesus

This Communion service is at St Paul’s Manningham – at 10.30am (9.30 for prayer beforehand)

We’ll try to livestream it at https://linktr.ee/ParishofGHM but it may not be the ‘normal’ offering!

Please remember that as was said at the Parish Forum – it really helps us evaluate these new types of service if you give constructive feedback.  So please come along, even if it may not be what you’re used to!

Sunday 10th October 2021 – Breakfast Church – 10am

This Sunday we will have our first Breakfast Church in almost 18 months.  This service is particularly designed to be ‘non churchy’ – so please think about who you could bring with you!  We will eat and worship all at the same time.  We are continuing our series  “What if Jesus came to my house?” This week it is The Greedy home – The Story of Zacchaeus

We will begin serving food at 10am – so come then to be sure of a seat!  We usually pray an hour before our services begin so we will pray at 9am.  This Sunday only our prayer time will include a short informal communion service.

Livestreaming – we don’t plan to stream Breakfast Church.  It doesn’t lend itself to YouTube.  We will try to put a short excerpt online before the end of Sunday to give a rough idea of what happened.

Notices

U:Nite is a united Youth group with young people from across the churches in the city.  Again, we haven’t met for a long time.  The first one is tomorrow – Saturday 9th at St Barnabas Village Hall.  Our Parish is hosting it.  Please pray for good new connection for those who have a faith, but find it hard to be a Christian in 21st Century Britain.  U:Nite is supposed to encourage them by meeting others in the same situation.

Highgate Graveyard is currently tended to by one stalwart member of the community.  Members of our parish are invited to help with a general clear up  from 10am-12 on Saturday 16th October.

Sunday 3rd October – What if Jesus Came to my House? – All Age Communion Service

This Sunday marks the start of something a bit different.   Our Series “What if Jesus Came to my House?” kicks off looking at  The Sad and Happy Home – Jarius’ Daughter.  This will be an All Age Communion Service.

We will be meeting in St Paul’s Manningham – St Paul’s Church, St Paul’s Rd, Bradford BD8 7LS – at 10.30am.  We will pray from 9.30am for 25 minutes

Please bear with us as many changes are being made in the space of a week.  We will be livestreaming at the usual link – https://linktr.ee/ParishofGHM but sound and songs may not work quite the same.  We can only experiment well with a full church and during a service.  So we hope it works out well enough for those who can’t join us to still enjoy the service.

The whole month schedule was in a previous update this week if you missed it.

Notices

It is two years since the sad loss of Janet Fry to cancer.  Her family are holding a Macmillan fund raiser at St Martin’s Church from 1 – 4pm on Sunday.  It would be great to support his event after the service at St Paul’s.  This is a follow on from a successful coffee morning for the same cause last Wednesday at St Barnabas Church.

What if Jesus Came to my House? – October 2021

October will be a month of changing things around a bit.  We are going to try all the options we have to engage with people who have not been attending our services during lockdown.  We hope it will look something like this.

Sunday 3rd October – All Age Communion Service 10.30am (9.30 prayer)

The Sad and Happy Home – Jarius’ Daughter

Sunday 10th October  – Breakfast church  10am soft start (9am Prayer with Informal Communion)

The Greedy home – Zacchaeus

Sunday 17thOctober  – ‘Juicy’ with Communion 10.30am (9.30 prayer)

The Snobby home:  The Woman who Anoints Jesus

Sunday 24thOctober  – Youth service with Communion 10.30am (9.30 prayer)

The Crowded home – Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man

Sunday 31stOctober  – Trad Sunday School – with Communion 10.30am (9.30 prayer)

The Family home:  Healing Peter’s Mother in Law

‘Juicy’ is a the only relatively new concept to our Parish.  We can’t tell you exactly how it will look.  But the basic idea is that we meet together at the start and at the end of the service but the middle has many options of where you go.  Perhaps a craft activity, maybe you’d like to sit quietly, or make the story out of Lego, some may prefer a discussion group.

Please remember that we are trying these ideas out.  We’d love helpful and honest feedback – preferably not straight away, while people are tired and still processing it themselves!

Sunday 26th September 2021 – Heroes of the Old Testament – RUTH

This Sunday is the end of our OT series!  We finish with the story of Ruth at 11am at St Philip’s Church. We will be live on zoom for the prayers beforehand at 10am and the service will be livestreamed on Youtube at 11am.

Notices

Thanks to all who came and graciously talked about our future as a Parish last week.  It was a good and positive occasion.  Apologies that you haven’t had the notes from the discussions yet – they are on the way!

We will also be moving these Sunday services after this week – so come to St Paul’s Manningham the week after. We will be sending out far more details in a separate email early next week.

NOTIFICATION OF APPOINTMENT – Rev Ben Care

The Revd Ben Care, currently Assistant Curate at Burton St Chad & Stretton with Claymills in the Lichfield Diocese is to become Associate Vicar of Girlington, Heaton & Manningham in the Bradford Episcopal
Area.   Ben will be licensed on 23rd  November 2021 at 7pm at St Paul’s Church, Manningham by Bishop Toby Howarth.

Ben introduces himself below….

I am delighted to have been appointed as the new Associate Minister for the parish of Girlington, Manningham and Heaton.

A little about me: I became a Christian aged 20 whilst at Warwick university and it transformed my life. Helen and I met and married on a Christian year out course in 2001 and have been trying to follow where Jesus leads ever since. Along the way I have worked and volunteered for mission organisations and I have long had a heart to see people of different faiths and backgrounds come to know Christ. Eventually the twists and turns of this journey led to being ordained in 2017 and serving my curacy in two churches in Burton upon Trent, in the Midlands. The things that I am passionate about are seeing God’s church become more fully what it can be; for us to be growing as disciples, living out His call on our lives wherever that finds us and being a people committed to His word and grappling with it. My hope is that as we grow and change more into His likeness this will spill over into the lives of those around us.

I will be coming with my family; my wife, Helen, and our daughters Anna (aged 11) and Lyla (aged 6). We love spending time outdoors, walking and exploring the countryside and nature so we’re really looking forward to getting to know the area. I am a board game geek, bookworm and coffee connoisseur.

I am excited to be joining you as we seek to serve Christ in this parish together.
